Decibel X – Pro Sound Meter App Overview and Details

“Decibel X” is one of very few sound meter apps on the market that has highly reliable, pre-calibrated measurements and supports frequency weightings: ITU-R 468, A and C. It turns your phone device into a professional sound meter, precisely measures the sound pressure level (SPL) all around you. This extremely useful and beautiful sound meter tool will not only be an essential gadget for many uses but also bring you a lot of fun. Have you wondered how quiet is your room or how loud is a rock concert or sport event? “Decibel X” will help you answer all of those.

– Trusted accuracy: the app is carefully tested and calibrated for most devices. The precision is matching with real SPL devices
– Frequency weighting filters: ITU-R 468, A, B, C, Z
– Spectrum analyzer: FFT and BAR graphs to display real time FFT. Those are very useful for frequency analysis and musical tests. Real time predominant frequency is also displayed.
– Powerful, smart history data management:
+ Recording data can be saved into a list of history records for future access and analysis
+ Each record can be exported as hi-res PNG graph or CSV text via sharing services
+ Fullscreen mode to give overview the whole history of an record
– Dosimeter: NIOSH, OSHA standards
– InstaDecibel to capture your dB report overlaid on photos and easily shared via popular social networks (Facebook, Instagram, etc.).
– Beautiful, intuitive and carefully crafted UI design

– Standard time weightings (Response Time): SLOW (500 milliseconds), FAST (200 milliseconds) and IMPULSE (50 milliseconds)
– Trimming calibration from -50 dB to 50 dB
– Standard measurement range from 20 dBA up to 130 dBA
– Spectrogram
– HISTO graph for plotted history of the recorded values
– WAVE graph with 2 display modes: Rolling & Buffer
– Real time scale level chart
– Display Current, Average/Leq, and Max values with both nice and clear digital and analog layouts
– Quick reference text to help you compare with real-life examples
– “Keep Device Stay Awake” option for long duration recording
– Reset and clear current recording at any time
– Pause/Resume at any time

– Please do not expect a quiet room reading will be 0 dBA. The range 30 dBA – 130 dBA is the standard usable range and an average quiet room will be about 30 dBA.
– Although most devices are pre-calibrated, custom calibration is suggested for serious purposes requiring higher precision and accuracy. To calibrate, you will need a real external device or calibrated sound meter as a reference, then adjust the trimming value until the reading matches with the reference.

it’s pretty good, accuracy seems adequate and I do like it. but for some reason it causes my phone to overheat and it drains my battery. I already set the response time to low but it still happens. I don’t know if this is normal or not. maybe the ads are causing it. I have to use it for a very short time to conserve battery power.

The app was great and no longer works. I used it very often to check sound levels. After the update it keeps asking if I want to do the paid subscription and when I say no it just keeps spinning the wheel and says “processing”. Uninstalling and reinstalling the app didn’t resolve the issue.

It’s pretty spot on. Out of the box it was about 3 or 4 decibels off. The running graph is very nice if you have to stop to look at the result of your test. The ability to save your tests is very handy and it’s ready to go immediately after installation as it requires little initial setup. Its a good application; I’ll definitely continue to use it.

It’s a very handy app, however I think itd be more effective used indoors only. It denotes basic street noise while recording, but if theres a very loud noise unusual for the environment, it will still change the high end decibel level to the one for that isolated incident. Perhaps there’s more to it than I was able to get to in my rush & if I go back & Im able to account for the sound that I’m specifically trying to capture (a voice yelling thru a bullhorn e.g.), then I will up my rating to 4 stars. I can’t give it 5 stars since it won’t export or share the data unless you pay to upgrade it.

I am a sound engineer. While the functions seem useful in this app, the subscription model is not a good way to go. Save yourself some money in the long run and buy professional equipment once. Also a smart phone microphone losses accuracy at over 90 dB’s, due to the fact these microphones are made for voice. I would be willing to pay $20.00 one time to purchase the app to support the developers in their efforts. There are some situations where this app would be useful and handy.

As a casual audiophile this isn’t for me, but I see the potential for the serious. The monthly subscription is the biggest bump for me. That being said, this app has great tools. A sound level meter that is tunable to your device’s mic. A dosimiter with multiple international standards. It can even run in the background. For the right person this is a gem, but I am not that person. I would, however, 1 time pay for an ok version with ok features.

It’s a good thing android has a little green dot to tell me that app is still using the microphone, even when the app is shut off. Change your options to only use the mic when the app is running, and completely shut the app off when not using it. Otherwise, it seems to be an ok app

Absolutely useless! I am at my suburban home 10 miles away from DFW Airport. It is mainly quiet until an airplane flies over(continuous & lasting noise), which is very loud and highly discerning. Also today there is a roofing company working 5 houses away and the noise is non-continuous but sharp and short(momentary). When there no external noise from either source, the sound level averages 25 dB but when either the noise from an airplane flying or hammering are present the meter barely picks up

I am absolutely amazed that the development team got back to me about my issues so quickly. I’m even more amazed that within a day that they found, patched and updated the app to solve the issues. Amazing app once again and the team behind it are fabulous!

I’m seeing the same problem as the recent reviews – endless spining circle after the latest update! Android version 8.1. Yes, it’s now working well since the fix, thanks!
